WINFIELD S. MAXWELL, the community was shocked this evening at the announcement, that spread like wildfire, that Winfield S. Maxwell, one of our most popular young business men, had dropped dead in the U.S. Hotel at 4 o'clock. He had sold some eggs to the hotel proprietor, and was delivering them. He assisted one of the employes to carry a large basketful up the stairs at the hotel, and immediately after the basket was set upon a table in the pantry, Mr. Maxwell fell to the floor. The employes in the kitchen ran to his assistance, and while awaiting the arrival of a doctor bathes his head in water. Dr. McCullough soon arrived, but too late. The young man breathed his last just after the doctor reached him. His body was removed to a room in the hotel and his friends were sent for, who are now with the remains. He is a son of Thomas Maxwell, of the Cross Roads, and brother of Geo. A. Maxwell of the firm of Brown, Maxwell & Henry. He was engaged in grocery business on North Fourth street. His age was 33 years. He was unmarried. He was apparently in most excellent health at the time of his sudden death. The doctor pronounced the cause of death heart disease.
