DR. T. S. HENING, a former prominent citizen of this city, died at his home in Superior, a suburb of Duluth, Miss., on Monday, April 8th, 1889, aged 73 years. He was the youngest son of James G. and Alicia C. Hening, and was born in this city in 1816. He was educated at Jefferson Medical college in Philadelphia. He practiced his profession in this city, and in partnership with Hon. Samuel Melvin (now of Oakland, Cal.) was in the drug business on the site now occupied by T. & J. Johnson, whose father, the late Dr. Thomas Johnson, suceeded upon Dr. Hening and Mr. Melvin's removal to Springfield, Ill., about thirty years ago. He was married to Miss Rachael Cooley, a teacher in the Steubenville seminary, who, with a son and daughter, survives him. He was a beloved christian physician and elder in the Second Presbyterian church of this city prior to his removal and was also an elder in the First Presbyterian church at Superior when called to relinquish his Master's work. He was a personal friend of Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, and a neighbor and friend of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, and was appointed president of the board of pensions for the state of Illinois by Mr. Lincoln, and filled the position with honor until the CLeveland adminstration. His remains were taken to Springfield, ill., for interment and services were held in the Presbyterian church of that city. He was the last of his family living, his two brothers, James G. and Robert M. Hening, and half-brother, the late Joseph O. Spencer, and two half-sisters, the late Mrs. Thomas Hoge, of New York and Mrs. John D. Slack, of this city, having all passed away in the years that are gone.
