SAMUEL T. PURVIANCE, of Smithfield, Dies in1943 Samuel Tomasson Purviance, 68, founder of the Bethel Children's Home at Smithfield, died suddenly at 4:45 a.m. Monday at Marietta, Ohio. He was born June 21, 1874 in Smithfield, a son of Evan H. and Lydia Wood Purviance. He was married in 1900 to Elizabeth Millhouse Hadley and the couple founded the Bethal Children's Home, a Christian home for homeless children. They were know to the children as Uncle Sam and Aunt Bessie. Mrs. Purviance ( Elizabeth Millhouse Hadley) died several years ago and Mr. Purviance remarried in August 1942, to Bertha Weidner. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church and was an ordained minister. Surviving are his wife, two children, Evan H. Purviance of Smithfield, Mrs. Russell Devol of Marietta, and a sister Mrs R.A. Pelt, of Cambridge, also five grandchildren. The body is at the home of his son, Evan Purviance in Smithfield, from where funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. In charge of services are the Rev. Charles Edgar and Rev.
