MERRILL PURVIANCE, Alliance---Merrill S. Purviance, 64, of Alliance, formerly of Wintersville, died Thursday in the Canterbury Villa Nursing Home. Mr. Purviance was the English chairman and director of dramatics at Marlington High School near Alliance until his retirement in 1978. Other high schools at which he taught were Jefferson Union, Sebring, Lake Township and North Canton. He was an ordained deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, where he held membership in the church choir for more than 30 years. The longtime educator was active in the Carnation City Players as an actor and director of the organizations numerous productions. He was a board member of the Alliance Community Concerts Association and the Alliance Music Study Club and a member of the Canton Players Guild. Surviving are his wife, Dorothery Ann Purviance, a son Edwin of Pittsburgh, and two grandsons. He was born January 26, 1919, in Wintersville, a son of the late Charles F. and Martha Swickard Purviance. Friends may call at the Cassady and Turkle Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday the body will lay in state from 1 p.m. and until time of services Monday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. the Rev Eugene Ebert will officiate and burial is in Fairmount Memorial Cemetery , Alliance. His favorite charities were the First Presbyterian Church, Alliance; Mount Union College, and the Anerican Cancer Society.
