MOSES ALEXANDER, one of the pioneer business men of Steubenville, died at his home on Highland avenue at 8:45 o'clock, Monday evening in the seventy-ninth year of his age. Last Tuesday he was in his usual good health and was down town calling on friends. He contracted a cold that day which rapidly developed into pleuro-pneumonia and caused his death. Deceased was on of the best known and most highly respected residents of this city. He was born in COunty Down, Ireland, in May, 1820 and came to this country in 1847, settling first in Philadelphia, and in 1850 moving to Pittsburgh. Two years later he came to Steubenville, remaining here since that time. He first engaged in the wholesale notion business and for a time was associated with Daniel McConville the firm name being Alexander & McConville. Later he engaged in the wholesale grocery business but retired from that in 1871 and in 1874 became associated with Thomas Lindsey in the lumber trade. A few years later he bought out his partner's interest and conducted the business alone until February, 1895, when he sold out to his son, William J., and retired from active business pursuits. Mr. Alexander was a man noted for his scrupulous honesty and integrity. Of a modest, unassuming disposition, he nevertheless was during the years of his active life a leader in the business circles of the city and one of those who helped develop the resources of this vicinity. He was one of the first and most consistent members of the United Presbyterian church when it was established in this city and from the day he united with that congregation until his death he never lost interest in his church nor failed to scrupulously perform his every Christian duty. In May 1863 he was united in marriage with Margaret McKeever, daughter of William and Jane McKeever, of this city. She with three children, Mrs. J. F. Elder, of Derry, Pa.; William J. Alexander, of this city, and Miss Eleanor H. Alexander, at home, survive to mourn his loss. The funeral services will be held from the family residence on Highland avenue at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Steubenville Herald Star, Tuesday, April 18, 1899 FUNERAL of M. ALEXANDER, the funeral of Moses Alexander took place from the family residence on Highland avenue at 3 o'clock this afternoon, and was attended by a very large number of friends of the deceased. The room in which the casket rested was filled with fragrant floral tokens. Impressive services were conducted by Rev. T. H. Hanna, Jr., assisted by Rev. Buchanan. The pall bearers were A. M.
