Jacob Coble

JACOB COBLE
_________________

JACOB COBLE, the citizens of Steubenville were shocked this morning to hear of the death of Mr. Jacob Coble, one of our old and highly esteemed citizens, and a prominent merchant of this city. Mr. Coble for the past year has been complaining at times, yet nothing of a serious character was anticipated by his friends. He had been able to attend to his usual business up to yesterday morning, when, not feeling well, he remained at home. Some time last night he took very sick, and died this morning at his residence, corner of FOurth and Adams streets, at twenty minutes to five o'clock. Mr. Coble was born near York, Pa., in 1813. He came to Carroll County, Ohio, in 1828, and from thence came to Steubenville in 1854, where he associated himself in the dry goods and grocery business with Sterling & Dunlap. He afterwards bought these parties out, and continued the business up to the present time. Originally in faith he was a Lutheran, but for the last thirty-seven years he has been an active and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and , since his residence here, a very active member of Kramer Chapel. At one time he was a member of the City Council from the First ward, and for the last five years has been an active member of the School Board. His time expiring this spring, he was again placed in nomination for the same position last evening. He leaves five children and a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his sudden death.

The funeral of Jacob Coble took place Sunday afternoon from his late residence, corner Fourth and Adams streets, and was largely attended by citizens and friends of the family. The School Board, of which he was a member, attended in a body. The services at the house were conducted by Revs. Milligan, Bracken and Mills, assisted by the choir of Kramer Chapel. Pall bearers, John H. Harris, John Bracken, Wm. B. Lindsay and John Chapman.
