GEORGE CLOSE, George W. CLose of New Somerset, aged 78 years, died Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Crook, of Center Avenue and Ninth Street, Wellsville. Deceased had been a sufferer of heart trouble for some time but had been confined to his bed about two weeks. Mr. Close was born January 13, 1839 in Jefferson County. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a private in Co. K, Second O. V. I. First Brigade, First Division, 14th A. C. On account of sickness, October 10, 1864, he was honorably discharged at Columbus. He re-enlisted March 6, 1865 in the Fourth O. V. I. and was granted a final honorable discharge, March 6, 1866. Mr. Close is survived by one brother, Sylvester Close, of Defiance County and five daughters: Mrs. B. A. Wilson and Mrs. Charles Elliott of New Somerset, O. Mrs. Wilbur Crook, Mrs. Thomas Saltsman and Mrs. Edward Elliott of Wellsville. Short services were held on Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Crook, conducted by Mr. Nellson of Wellsville Christian church. The remains were taken to New Somerset where funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the New Somerset church of which he had been a member.
