CHARLES POLEN, one of the oldest residents of Salem township, died Monday evening at his home, aged 74 years. He was born in Virginia or what is now knwon as West Virginia, some miles back of Wellsburg and moved to Salem township over a half century ago. He had been married twice, the maiden name of his first wife being Angel. She died over twenty years ago. His second wife, whose death occurred about five years ago, was a sister of S. P. Arnold, of Richmond, this county. Ten children survive: Mrs. Mary Wilson and Margaret Wilson of Wellsville, Andrew of East Springfield, Maria, Daniel, Simon, Eva, Roy, Pearl and Robert at home. Mr. Polen followed farming until declining years compelled him to yield the work to younger hands. He was a man of the highest integrity, upright as a citizen and a kind neighbor. In politics Mr. Polen was a Democrat of the staunchest sort and he has voted the ticket for a half century, feeling that allegiance to his party represented what was highest in government. He was a Democrat through troubless times when it counted for something to be a Democrat, and it was a pleasure to him in his late years to look back with pride to the fact that nothing kept him from exercising privileges of citizenship accorded to him under free government. He has been an attendant on the Methodist church for years.
