MRS. AMANDA BLACKBURN SMYTH, formerly of Steubenville, and wife of W. H. Smyth, passed away at her home near Harlem Springs, Carroll County, Tuesday morning, August 15, at 12:40 O'clock, aged 76 years, in March last. Mrs. Smyth had been in failing health for about a year from a general breakdown of the system and had been confined to her room for several months. She was a daughter of James B. and Amy Blackburn, pioneer residents of Steubenville, Mr. Blackburn having been a merchant in this city for over forty years. His general store was located on the site of the original building still standing. Mrs. Smyth was a nurse in the Civil War, having followed her husband to the battlefield after he had been wounded. After nursing him back to health she remained in the ----------------of an army nurse during the remainder of the war, and since that time has been an active and prominent member and official of the National Nurses' Association and also the Women's Relief Corps. Mrs. Smyth was born in this city in March, 1840, and was educated in the public schools and graduated from the Steubenville Female Seminary. She was married to Mr. Smyth in 1860 and after a short residence in Steubenville they went to Carroll County and resided on the farm on which she died. She is survived by her husband and one son, Roscoe C. Smyth, a storekeeper of Bergholz. Also by one sister Miss Lizzie Blackburn, and one brother David Blackburn, residents of Springfield, Mo. Mrs. Smyth was an aunt of W. W. Mackay, of Steubenville. Mrs. Smyth was a member of the M. P. church of this city and her many old friends in this city and vicinity will sincerely mourn her death. She was a woman of many kindly impulses and a consistent Christian. The funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at her late home after which the cortege will come to Steubenville, where interment will be made in the Blackburn family lot in Union Cemetery.
