EDWARD BRETTELL, who, with his brother, operates the Brettell Coal Mines of Mingo Junction, Ohio, is a son of Thomas and Pricilla (Andrews) Brettell, both of whom were natives of England. The father, who at the age of ten years began working in the iron mills in his native country, was identified with the iron and steel industry for about fifty-two years, and is now living in retirement at Mingo Junction, Ohio. THe mother died in Mingo Junction, in 1907, at the age of fifty-seven years. Six children were born to the parents of our subject: THomas; George; Edward; Bessie, who is the wife of Roy Welchhouse; Jessie, who is the wife of Harley Still; and Elizabeth, all of whom with the exception of Thomas, were born in America. Edward Brettell parents came to America in 1871, and the family located at Akron, Ohio, where the father purchased property. They then resided for a time in Marquette, Mich., Green Castle, Ind., Terre Haute, Ind., and at Centralia, Ill., where the father was one of the organizers and stockholders of the Centralia Iron Mills. His brother Thomas, Jr. began working under his father, who had charge of the puddling furnace, and continued in that business until 1883. In that year Thomas went to Steubenville, and shortly afterward came to Mingo Junction, where he and his father both worked in the iron and steel mills. Since 1908, Mr. Brettell has devoted his entire attention to his coal interests, having embarked in that business with his brother, Thomas, in 1904. They first leased and operated for six years, the Pratt Mines, which are located between, Mingo Junction and Steubenville, Ohio and in 1910, purchased the coal beds on the Means and Altimont farms near Mingo Junction. Here they employ about twent-five men in their mines, which are known as the Brettell Mines, and carry on an extensive and lucrative business.  Return to Family Tales
